Ralph Hunter-Menzies exhibited with Collective Ending as part of ABSINTHE Prologue, ABSINTHE §1, Collective Ending HQ Housewarming & HOUSE §1.
Ralph (b. 1988) lives and works in London, he graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2010.
The relationship between deliberate and accidental marks has always interested Ralph. His paintings revolve around the ideas of tension and juxtaposition. Drawing from vernacular forms found in the urban landscape, his work focuses on mark-making which he reduces to its most basic elements: composition and appropriation, creation and destruction. The artist often reuses old canvases and continues to work on their surfaces, using a combined array of painterly techniques such as blasted paint and printing, as well as experimenting with dyes. Influenced by the DIY culture, he cuts, composes and reassembles the pieces of fabric using a sewing machine. The resulting compositions speak of abstraction, gesture and balance.
