Bio
Founded in 2019 by Fenella Brereton and Maia Magoga, Gobyfish are a food-based collective who host performative dinners and create edible installations. Their anti-capitalist concept-dinners centre ritual food practices, collaboration and knowledge exchange, with an emphasis on seasonal, local and foraged produce. Foregrounding the act of eating as a metaphor to talk about wider conversations on ecology, the sociopolitical and ancestral ways of knowing; they see food as both subject and object.
Their practice-based research is underpinned by the symbiotic principle of interdependence and an understanding that the boundaries between the human and more-than-human are porous. Gobyfish understand that everything leaks into everything else, and see these processes as neither rigid nor fixed, but rather as being in a dynamic state of flux. Fermenting seasonal crops and foraging edible plants is often a starting point for them as they seek to express this fusion of land and body in their work.
Fenella (b.1995) is a multi-disciplinary artist and Chef based in London. Brereton received her BA in Fine Art Sculpture from Camberwell College of Art in 2017.
Maia (b.1994, London) is a Brazilian-Argentinian visual artist living and working in London. Magoga received their MA in Visual Communication from the Royal College of Art and their BSc in Social Anthropology from the University of Manchester. They are currently artist-in-residence at Omved gardens, an interdisciplinary space in-between art and ecology.
