James Capper’s art adopts the techniques, materials and complex problem-solving processes of innovation and engineering to develop the possibilities of sculpture. His sculptural language evolves along different modular chains termed ‘Divisions’. Each work can be understood as a prototype, and therefore each sculpture produces questions that the next work attempts to answer, so that over time each Division produces its own clear iconography and application in action. Through his work, James Capper has developed a wide variety of sculpture components which are attachment parts for his large mobile works but can be shown and viewed autonomously.
James lives and works in London. He graduated with an MA in Sculpture from Royal College of Art in 2010, having previously completed his BA in Sculpture at Chelsea College of Arts (2005-2008). Recent exhibitions and projects include: MUDSKIPPER, WALKING WORKBOAT (Commission, London, Forthcoming), Izolyatsia (Commission, Kiev, Forthcoming), WAYS TO MAKE A SHIP WALK (Solo Exhibition) at Hannah Barry Gallery (London, 2018), AEROCAB (Commission and Solo Exhibition) at 3-D Foundation (Verbier, 2018) WAYS TO MAKE MOBILE SCULPTURE (Solo Exhibition) at Albion Barn (Oxford, 2017), JAMES CAPPER: DIVISIONS (Solo Exhibition) at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (Yorkshire, 2013).
