Bio
Lees’ work investigates ideas of cycles, constancy and mortality; the sense that things come to an end and the potential for new beginnings. This constancy, be it in religion, science, history or in organic matter, is visible in her practice through her attempts to make sense of and recognise traces of life. Traditional processes, materials and rituals are often reworked to explore how ideas and beliefs can live, die and be reborn across times and cultures.
Hannah (b. Kent) lives and works in Margate. She received a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art, having previously completed her BA in Fine Art at University for the Creative Arts, Canterbury (2004-2006) and her BA in Fine Art & Visual Culture at the University of the West of England (2003-2004). Recent exhibitions and projects include: Sunday Art Fair (Two-Person Presentation w. Spencer Lewis) with LTD Los Angeles (London, 2019), The Trees That Yield (Group Exhibition) at Whitstable Biennale (Kent, 2018), Nicholas Kirkwood Presents Hannah Lees (Solo Exhibition) at Nicholas Kirkwood (London, 2018), Turner Contemporary & the British Museum Commission: Hannah Lees (Solo Exhibition) at Turner Contemporary (Margate, 2016).
