Bio
Klara Szafrańska is a Polish multi-media artist living in Nottingham, UK. Her practice derives from questioning the binary concepts of belonging constructed by Capitalist systems and explores what is in between. Szafrańska utilises her hybrid identities grounded in her experience of moving to the UK from Poland in 2017. She adapts intuitive methodologies of working with clay, video and performance by sourcing her imagery from the everyday and the subconsciously imagined. Drawing from socio-political themes like fetish and kitsch in her process of making and reflecting she links the political and social to the visceral, metaphysical and inner. She looks at how the durability and non-disposability of familiar, pretend-to-be-functional objects made in ceramics lure us in with the promise of forever nourishment. Her work is always centred around projected objects, their materiality being an outcome of incorporating the features and properties of materials in her modes of reflecting and making.
Klara is currently based in Backlit Gallery studios, Nottingham. She completed her BA in Fine Art from Loughborough University in 2020 and is currently in the final year of completing her MFA Fine Art degree from Nottingham Trent University. Recent exhibitions include I moved to England (duo exhibition), Surface Gallery, Nottingham and Let Them Eat Fake (group exhibition) curated by Bad Art Presents, The Bomb Factory Art Foundation, London.
